We are happy to report that we have been given special permission to post NEW EVANGELICALISM: The New World Order by Paul Smith and From Which Well Are You Drinking? Exposing the Dangers in the Emerging Church Movement by David Winscott on our Herescope website.
Here is the back story. One day, several years after I co-authored our 2004 monograph The Pied Pipers of Purpose, I received a telephone call from Pastor Paul Smith of Calvary Chapel, brother of Chuck Smith. He said he was quite interested to read our factual information and analysis about Peter Drucker, the business guru who developed the 3-legged stool paradigm for social transformation. Paul then told me a remarkable story of how Peter Drucker was actively wooing megachurch leaders and pastors during the 1980s to persuade them to join up with his giant social experiment on evangelicalism. This story of Peter Drucker’s pervasive influence, with key background information, is told in Paul Smith’s book NEW EVANGELICALISM: The New World Order.
Paul Smith provides an historical account of the deep compromises of the past several generations of evangelical leaders. These concessions have left the current church in a state of “crisis and confusion.” Pastor Paul traces “the seminal seeds that corrupted not only the major denominational churches, but specifically the conservative believing folks in these churches.” This is a book about the history of the postmodern movement within evangelicaldom, and especially the roles that Fuller Theological Seminary, Bob Buford of Leadership Network, and Peter Drucker played in shaping the leaders that would guide the Emerging (Emergent) Church Movement, Neo(New)-Calvinism, etc.
We are still experiencing the terrible fallout from this massive training exercise in re-shaping pastoral worldviews. Most of the leaders who submitted themselves to this initiative are still oblivious to the direful effects this had on their biblical calling, or the people in their churches. Very few men have ever come out of this movement to question it, to self-examine its effects upon them, and to repent openly.
Much of this leadership training was then incorporated into seminary training for all sorts of denominations and church fellowships. As a result, three generations of pastors have now been taught how to have their churches to do “vision-casting” – which is taking an occult method and twisting it to try to fit a biblical narrative. These pastors were indocrinated to adopt the pseudo-gospel evangelization model that deals in goals, statistics, assessing, databanking and “results.” As we pointed out in our monograph, the imperfect sheep in their congregations who cannot “measure up” are mistreated in this onerous system.
Several years after that first phone call, Paul asked me to help with his New Evangelicalism book project . On a trip to southern California I met with Paul and his friend David Winscott, who served as the main editor. My job was to compile well-documented research on Peter Drucker’s background, beliefs and activities. This information formed a solid foundation for Paul’s writing.
After Paul’s book was published “all hell broke loose” in an aggressive leadership takeover of Calvary Chapel after Chuck died. Paul was callously cast aside and his book was discarded. It became a tragic example of the very things Paul had been warning against. I stayed in touch with Paul until he went to be with the Lord.
Recently David Winscott reconnected with me, asking for research help once again. When I inquired about the status of Paul’s book, David gave us permission to post it on our website, writing: “Paul verbally gave me permission to freely use it without charging anyone so that the maximum number of people could benefit from it. Paul’s heart!”
David also gave us permission to post his booklet From Which Well Are You Drinking? Exposing the Dangers in the Emerging Church Movement at no charge on our website. This is the most excellent resource that we have seen on the subject of the Emergent/Emerging Church movement: its history, leaders, and their beliefs.
We praise the Lord that we can post these high quality historical books. It seems like the Lord has opened the door “for such a time as this.” We are increasingly hearing from people who are searching out the true history to glean factual background information to inform themselves on what really happened to the church over the past decades. These two books, plus our website and blog itself, should help them navigate through answers. We are continuing to post new materials on this website as the Lord gives us grace and mercy. As we post new materials we will update you.
