1 Chronicles 16:29 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
30 Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.
31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth.
32 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.
33 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.
34 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
35 And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.

Holiness is beautiful and it is in holiness that we are to worship the Lord God Almighty. And the writer of Chronicles begins the next verse with the words, "Fear before him...." David wrote of these things in Pslam 96:

9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth: the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people righteously.
11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof.
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice
13 Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

The fear David speaks of here is not a fear that is meant to drive one away from God, but a fear that is meant to drive one to Him. What underlies a true fear of God is to see that He is holy. David speaks of this kind of fear here.

One reason David calls the earth to fear God in His holiness is that God alone reigns over the earth and therefore, over all things and creatures. He is Sovereign, yet a righteous, just judge who judges and will judge righteously. David says because He is Sovereign, the world will not pass away without His consent, but that IT WILL BE established and there SHALL BE a judgement of all men by His righteousness. He says at that time that even creation will rejoice.

How much more should David's words mean to us since we live in a time when : "for he cometh . . . he shall judge." As that time draws nearer, the evidence of two kinds of men will be on the earth: those who fear what is happening on earth and those who working out there salvaiton in the fear of God:

Luke 21:26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

2 Corinthians 7:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

How will men know that they don't have to live in fear of what is coming on the world? By those who fear Him and are working out their salvation with fear and trembling telling them the good news and holding out to all the word of life:

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

We have spent many chapters on God's call to us regarding holiness, and in these verses we have God's call to others through sanctified, Spirit-filled lives: "That ye may be blameless and harmless . . . Holding forth the word of life." Paul says this is our worship, our reasonable service:

Romans 12:12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

All of these themes are summed up in the following verses from 2 Thessalonians:

2 Thessalonians 1:6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
7 And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Verse 10 tells us how, when Christ comes in the beauty of His holiness, He will glorify His people. Verse 12 tells us how Christ is now glorified in all who respond appropriately to the call of God. That doesn't mean that when we walk in holiness and tell others of the hope that is set before us that the visible glory Christ has now in the presence of God is increased. He is perfectly glorious. What it does mean is that He is honored and praised and that increases towards Him as more people are added to the Church. It also means that He is glorified in bringing lost sinners to such a state of obedience and love towards Him.

We are a people who live to glorify God in Christ in this way. Scripture says that over and over again. Jesus glorified God by His death, and we are called to glorify Him by all that we do as well:

John 21:19 This spake he [Jesus], signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

Romans 15:5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
7 Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God.
8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
9 And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

2 Corinthians 9:12 For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints, but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;
13 Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;
14 And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you.
15 Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

Our holiness in deed and word glorify Him who purchased us through the holy blood of the Lamb, and our God expects this of us right up to the time of Christ's return in the glory and power of the Father. This is the very call of God for His good pleasure.
